The title was awarded to Lucy Smith, founder and managing director of Clarity Umbrella, in recognition of her exceptional leadership, innovation, and resilience in steering her business through some of the most challenging economic periods in recent memory.
Lucy launched Clarity Umbrella in 2019, providing employment solutions for UK-based contractors caught under IR35 legislation. Her client-centric model—offering same-day pay runs, open-door communication, and unwavering support—has won national acclaim, including three Contracting Awards for Best Umbrella Company. Judges commended Lucy for her tight operational control, strategic tech investments, and tireless advocacy on behalf of her sector.
Lucy’s journey from single parent and redundancy to building one of Suffolk’s highest-turnover companies in just six years is nothing short of inspirational. In her own words, “There has never been any real thought over the journey I have travelled, so for the first time in my career it has given me a moment to reflect on my own success and realise what I have achieved.”
